A Plea to Save a Wonder of the World

In this poignant piece, Mexican poet and eco-hero, Homero Aridjis spells out the complex factors that are killing off a wonder of the natural world — the mass migration of the Monarch butterfly.  Aridjis was integral in establishing the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve as a World Heritage Site and is now calling for action through the entirety of the butterfly’s tri-national migratory range of Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

ECOLIFE’s programs in Mexico work to reduce deforestation of the Monarch’s over-wintering habitat in Michoacan, while improving the health and livelihood of people in the local communities.  We are also working in the US to spread the word about the prime importance of adopting sustainable agricultural techniques. With effective programs and protections in place in Mexico. the responsibility now rests largely on the US to move away from glyphosates and other herbicides and pesticides that are detrimental to Monarchs and other pollinators, to move away from GMO crops, and to create a safe corridor for this iconic species and its incredible mass migration.

Click here to read Aridjis’ article and view data on the increased use of glyphosates in correlation to the decline of migratory monarchs.
